Different film publications

As part of my coursework I am creating a magazine cover to the genre I have chosen. In order to get my magazine to look as authentic as possible I have researched ten magazine covers and I have listed down what genres they cover, what content they specifically write about and whether they focus on mainstream or independent films.

Cineaste:

A film magazine company that was first published in 1967. It is published once every three months. It publishes reviews, in depth analysis and interviews with film makers and actors. It writes for both holly wood and independent films though it tends to focus on films outside of the mainstream and it describes itself as "America's leading magazine on the art and politics of cinema".









 

American Cinematographer:

Monthly magazine that focuses on the art and craft of cinematography. It focuses on domestic and foreign film productions, as well as commercials and television. Usually cinematographers are interviewed but occasionally directors and film makers feature as well. This magazine was first published in 1920.

HOTDOG:

An English film magazine that was first published in 2000 and then had its last issue in 2006 due to financial problems. Regarded as a partisan publication, it ussually avoided writing about the content of hollywood block buster film by just writing about the character of the film instead.

STARBURST:

British Science fiction magazine that was first published in 1977. It contains news, features and reviews and interviews. It is published monthly with additional news and reviews. Recently it also established its own magazine website.

Shivers:

Former British magazine that covers horror movies, television shows and literature. The magazine published its first issue in 1992 and published its last issue in 2008.

Monthly publication that is based in London. It was first published. UNCUT magazine mentions old albums, interviews with directors and music. It is designed to get 25-40 year olds to focus on movies and music.

UK based film that is published 13 times a year. The magazine was first published in 1997. The magazine provides a range of features such as interviews with actors and directors and future releases

British magazine that was first published in July 1989. It is regarded to be the biggest selling UK magazine. It reviews both mainstream and art films. Empire is populist in both coverage and approach.








     

American magazine that reviews independent films. Typically it reviews directors, actors, animators and producers. The magazine was first published in 1992 and now reviews for the independent film community as well. It is published quarterly.














Sight and sound

A British monthly film magazine. Sight and Sound was first published in 1932. This magazine reviews all film releaseses each month and features a full cast and crew credit list for each film that they review.
















Screen International

Screen International focuses on international film business. It is a multimedia film magazine. Its first issue was in 1889. In 1975 it became a weekly magazine. This magazine mainly reviews foreign films, cast and crew, and film festivals in places like Berlin, Toronto and Hong Kong.
